The Healing Torah
Every Torah has a special story, but this one carries an extraordinary journey.
It began on the first anniversary of October 7. In the shadow of heartbreak, we set out to write a new Torah. A sacred response to pain. A tribute to the lives taken. A declaration that the Jewish spirit lives on. Each letter written in memory. Each word a step toward light.
Later that year, we received the painful news that Gavi, our dear friend, had been diagnosed with cancer. His strength, courage, and unwavering positivity lit a fire in all of us. Together with his incredible parents, Mark and Camille, we chose to dedicate the Torah in his honor. What began as a memorial became a mission. A Torah of healing. A Torah for Gavi.
But perhaps this Torah is even more than that. It is a Torah of healing not only for one person, but for the entire Jewish people. For a people still reeling, still rising. It offers comfort, strength, and connection. A way for anyone to dedicate a portion, a verse, or a word in the merit of a loved one’s healing, memory, or in unity with the Jewish people.
There is nothing more whole than a broken heart. And today, so many are broken. So many hearts carry pain, sorrow, and longing. This Torah of healing is a response to that pain. A prayer for healing of body and spirit. Because it is this very Torah that has lifted our spirits for thousands of years, and it is this very Torah that can heal a broken heart.
This scroll is more than parchment and ink. It holds a story of resilience and light. It was written for a people who meet challenges with grace and determination. A people who inspire by simply being who they are.
Much like Gavi, when he wrote the final letters of the Torah. In that moment, it felt as if the Torah was receiving its soul. The strength and hope that now live within it.
Because Gavi’s strength is the strength of the Jewish people. And that is the greatest answer, the greatest tribute to the broken souls and the souls we lost. That we will live. We will dance. And we will celebrate.
One day soon, as the prophet promises, God will wipe away the tears from every face. There will be no more pain. In the shadows of a broken heart, we will shine bright.
This Torah will live at Chabad at UNR. It will be read, danced with, and learned from. With every touch, it will carry that message forward. Even in life’s hardest moments, we can fill the world with light, one letter at a time.
